Chapter Fourteen
Al turned the Harley into the lane and eased up toward the house. He checked in all directions and could see no sign of anyone. The nearest house was a quarter mile away, and a copse of trees stood midway between the properties.
As soon as the engine slowed to an idle, he heard a gunshot. Bam! Then another. Bam! No time for the kickstand. He switched the motor off and lowered the bike to the ground on its side. He took off in a run around the corner of the house toward the back, the direction from which heâd heard the shots.
Bonnie and Maury stood close together. They swung around as Al came panting around the back corner. Maury held Alâs Sig in one hand. He lowered it until it pointed at the ground. âWhat?â
âIâm teaching him to shoot, just like my dad did for me.â Bonnie grinned as she watched the look of alarm and concern ease from Alâs face. âYou were sure Johnny on the spot to our defense, though. How did you plan to take on people with guns when youâre unarmed?â
âYou havenât used up all the ammo, have you? I only grabbed the one box.â Al bent forward, hands on his knees, until he caught his breath.
âWeâve been careful. Iâm just trying to get him the basics. I grew up with the point-and-shoot method and got pretty handy, as you may recall.â
A row of sticks and one can stood at the base of a small rise. Bonnie took the pistol from Maury. She spun and fired. The can sailed into the air and clattered as it rattled up and over the hill.
She really could shoot. The one time theyâd had to count on her, sheâd been armed with a chiefâs special with a three-inch barrel, and sheâd been darn close with it, enough so heâd been able to back her up.
âYou donât have to sell me,â Al said. âIâve seen you in action. But have you considered what the neighbors might think?â
âWell, no.â Bonnie glanced around. âNo oneâs said anything yet.â
âAl used to be quick like you, Bonnie,â Maury said.
âNote the âused to be,â if you will,â Al said.
Maury grinned. âWe had a Dalmatian named Pebbles. We could put a piece of cheese on her nose, and sheâd sit until we said âgo.â Then sheâd flip the cheese and grab it. Al used to snatch the cheese out of the air before she could gobble it. Just about surprised the spots off her. Sheâd look around. âWhere did the cheese go?â Then Al would open his hand.â
âAre you still that fast, Al?â Bonnie tilted her head and narrowed her eyes at him.
âOh, I have flashes now and again. Now, letâs get inside. I want to get this blasted makeup off and, if thereâs any justice in the world, sneak in a short nap.â
âSo, everything went smooth,â Maury said. âDid you learn anything?â
âNot what youâd think.â Al waved off any other questions and went around to the front to park the bike properly.
